The details

What a frame changes

The frame carries the load

In a framed system the glass sits inside an aluminum structure: posts at intervals, a top rail across, and a channel or clamps holding each panel. Because the frame carries the load, the glass does less of the work.

That makes the assembly tougher around pools, kids and patio furniture. It also brings the price down, especially on long runs.

What you give up is the uninterrupted sheet of glass, since you’ll see a post every few feet. If the view has to be completely clear, a frameless glass railing is the other way to go.

Framed or frameless: the honest comparison

We install both systems, so we have no reason to push you either way.

Look
a post every few feet with a top rail, against uninterrupted glass
Cost
lower than frameless, and the gap widens on long runs
Best for
long pool decks, busy family yards and tighter budgets
Styling choice
wide, from post shape to rail profile and colour
Panel swaps
straightforward, especially with clamps

Where framed glass makes the most sense

An aluminum railing with glass panels is a natural fit for balconies, pool decks and rear elevations where the run is long. It also handles stairs well, with a round rail the code asks for.

On a new or refinished deck, a black deck railing with glass panels ties the frame to dark windows and trim. If you’re still weighing materials, our page on deck railing compares glass, framed glass and aluminum side by side.

Built to the numbers in Part 9 of the building code

Every run we install follows the Ontario Building Code, and the numbers are on your drawing before anything is cut.

Guard height
900 mm when the surface is up to 1800 mm above grade, 1070 mm above that
Maximum opening
100 mm
Guard load
1.0 kN
Glass
tempered or laminated safety glass

What happens if you keep the old railing

Painted steel that has bubbled at the welds, or a kit screwed together on site, tends to fail at the connections first. A guard that moves when you lean on it is a safety problem before it’s a looks problem.

How it works

How a job runs, from free quote to walk-through

Five steps, the same on every job, whether it’s a front step or a full deck.

  1. 1. Site measure

We come to your home and measure the actual stairs, deck or entry, free of charge. The written quote comes from real numbers, not a photo and a guess.

  2. 2. Drawing and free quote

You get a dimensioned drawing and a written, itemised quote for glass, posts, hardware and installation. Nothing is cut until you approve it.

  3. 3. Fabrication

We build the railing to the measured dimensions, so nothing gets trimmed to fit on site. Aluminum pickets are welded in the shop and powder-coated.

  4. 4. Installation

The same crew that measured your job installs it, usually in one day at a front entry and two to three days on a deck. We work through the winter, too.

  5. 5. Walk-through

We walk the finished railing with you and check every post, panel and fastener. Your written workmanship warranty comes with the final invoice.

Why us

Why hire us for a framed glass railing in Oakville

A framed glass railing in Oakville is a long run of posts, rails and panels, so straight lines and even gaps are what you notice from the yard. We fabricate to your measurements in the shop, so posts land where the framing is solid and nothing gets cut to fit on site.

Aluminum and glass railing systems are only as good as the person who sets the posts. With us, that’s the same crew you met at the measure.

  • Free on-site measure, plus a same-day ballpark from photos
  • A written, itemised quote, with no surprise extras later
  • A dimensioned drawing you approve before anything is cut
  • The same crew from the measure to the walk-through
  • A written workmanship warranty with the final invoice

Questions

Framed glass questions, answered

How long does a framed glass railing in Oakville take to install?

The install itself usually takes one to three days, depending on the length of the run and the number of stairs. From approved drawing to finished railing, plan on about two weeks for a front entry and three to five weeks for a full deck.

Is framed glass cheaper than frameless glass?

Yes, framed glass usually costs less per foot, and the difference grows on long runs. Frameless glass needs more hardware per foot to hold the panels, while in a framed system the frame does that work.

What can I choose on an aluminum glass railing system?

You choose the post shape, the top rail, how the glass is held, the glass type and the colour. Most clients pick black posts with clear 12 mm tempered glass, and white, bronze, sandstone or a RAL match are all available.

Can you build a glass balcony railing with a frame?

Yes, a framed glass balcony railing is one of the most common jobs for this system. Fascia mounting fixes the posts to the side of the slab or deck, which keeps the full width of the balcony usable.

Is framed glass strong enough around a pool?

Yes, the frame takes knocks from kids, furniture and pool toys better than glass on its own. Where the railing also forms part of the pool enclosure, we check the local by-law height and gate rules before we draw it.

Can framed glass follow my deck stairs?

Yes, the frame steps down the stair with matching posts and the round graspable rail the code asks for. Panels are cut to the slope of the stair, so the lines stay parallel to the treads.
